Retro Drink for Saturday Night: Watermelon Gin Fizz

The Gin Fizz was so popular in the first half of the 1900s, bars employed teams of bartenders keeping the gin fizzed and the punters happy. The cocktail also carried an air of sophistication as mentioned in the 1907 novel by George Ade called “Slim Princess” where Mr Pike is aghast at the protagonist’s ignorance about the Gin Fizz and demands “Bring out some ice, produce your jigger and get busy!” It has somewhat fallen out of favour amongst cocktails, the “fizz” on top is not such a novelty anymore and the classic G&T (gin and tonic) has pretty much eradicated most of the other gin drinks from your local.

Watermelon Gin Fizz

The original recipe for a Gin Fizz calls for fine sugar, gin, lemon juice and soda water. There are variations like the Silver Fizz which has egg whites and a Diamond White which replaces soda water with champagne. We made our Saturday Night Retro Drink with fresh watermelon and lime juice, blending in mint for a really refreshing flavor.
Now, all we would need is some glamorous lounge somewhere with a hot crooner in the spotlight and it would be as if we had stepped back in time. But luckily we have Gin Fizz on tap and Buble live from Los Angeles… a modern girl’s retro Saturday night.

Ingredients Watermelon Gin Fizz

Watermelon Gin Fizz

Preparation time: 30 minutes
Serves: 2

100 ml Gin
25 ml sugar syrup
100 ml fresh lime juice (apprx. 2 limes)
100 ml fresh watermelon juice (apprx. 1/4 – 1/2 of small watermelon)
soda water to top off the drink (150 ml can)
8 mint leaves

Make the watermelon juice by cutting the watermelon into smallish pieces. If your watermelon has seeds – seed it first. In a bowl roughly crush the watermelon pieces, so that they produce some juice.

Place the crushed watermelon into a blender and blend until smooth. Sieve the liquified watermelon into a jug. Set aside.

Watermelon juice

Juice the limes. Set aside. In a cocktail mixer mix gin, sugar syrup, 4 mint leaves, lime juice and watermelon juice with ice.

Watermelon Gin Fizz mix

Shake and divide the mix between two highball glasses. Add ice and two mint leaves per glass. Top off the drink with soda water.
