I have a huge sweet tooth, so I am always looking for sweet snacks that are healthier than chocolate or cookies. These Oven Baked Apple Crisps tick that box. They are a bit sinful as they have added sugar, but to make them healthier I have skipped using oil. The best part of making these is that you don’t need any fancy equipment – you can make these in your oven (as the name suggests). It’s time-consuming as at 100 C I kept them in the oven for 3 1/2 hours. But you only have to rotate the pans once an hour, so the rest of the time is yours. Store these Oven Baked Apple Crisps in an airtight container and snack away.
Oven Baked Apple Crisps
Preparation time: 20 minutes (+ baking time 3-5 hours)
4 apples (I used Royal Gala Apples)
1/8 cup caster sugar
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
Preheat the oven to 100 C / 200 F. In a small bowl mix the ground cinnamon with sugar. Set aside.
Wash the apples and cut them into quarters disregarding the cores.
With a sharp knife or a vegetable slicer (I used a sharp cheese slicer) slice the apple quarters into thin slices.
Transfer the cinnamon-sugar into a large, shallow bowl. Place the apple slices on top of the cinnamon-sugar and mix with your hands.
When the apple slices are equally coated with the cinnamon-sugar, transfer them onto baking pans. Lay the slices evenly so that they are not on top of each other.
Place the baking pans on the lowest racks in the oven. Leave them in the oven for around 3-5 hours (mine were ready after 3 1/2 hours). Rotate (up – down) the pans after an hour, continue to do this each hour. When the moisture has left the apple slices and they are crisp, take them out of the oven and transfer to cool down on a clean work surface.
Store in airtight containers.
